A Five-Decade Journey of Cultural Friendship Between Pakistan and Japan
INTRODUCTION
The Pakistan Japan Cultural Association (PJCA), established in 1972 in Islamabad, has played a vital role in promoting cultural understanding and friendship between Pakistan and Japan through exhibitions, lectures, performances, literary initiatives, and cultural exchanges.
For more than five decades, PJCA has served as a dynamic platform for people-to-people interaction, artistic collaboration, and cultural dialogue between the two nations.
Efforts are currently underway to document and preserve the Association’s early history, ensuring that its cultural legacy is recorded for future generations.
During this period, initiatives were also undertaken to expand PJCA’s presence by facilitating the registration of regional chapters, including PJCA Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) and PJCA Lahore, Punjab, with the aim of strengthening cultural outreach and promoting Pakistan–Japan friendship across different regions of the country.

Cultural Timeline
1972
Foundation of PJCA
The Pakistan Japan Cultural Association was established in Islamabad to promote cultural relations and friendship between Pakistan and Japan.
Hafiz S. A. Rehman served as Founder Secretary General and remained associated with PJCA for over five decades.
Late 1970s – Early 1980s
Early Cultural Engagement
PJCA organized cultural programs, hosted Japanese delegations, arranged exhibitions, lectures, and film screenings, and facilitated meaningful people-to-people interaction.
1983
Official Registration
PJCA was formally registered under the Foreign Cultural Associations Act, providing official recognition to its cultural initiatives.
1989
Institutional Development
PJCA strengthened its organizational structure by improving administrative processes and coordination. This marked a transition toward a more structured institutional framework, enabling sustained cultural engagement.
1984–2004
Archival Period Under Review
Documentation from this period is currently being compiled. Members and well-wishers are encouraged to contribute records, photographs, and historical material.

REVIVAL
2021 – Present
Cultural Revival
PJCA entered a renewed phase of cultural engagement, strengthening collaboration with the Embassy of Japan and revitalizing its programs and outreach.
